Viral and bacteriological laboratory
The City Clinical Pathological Anatomy Bureau (hereinafter referred to as the СCPB) virus and bacteriology laboratory conducts tests to detect clinically significant microorganisms in autopsy, biopsy, and surgical biological material. The laboratory is equipped with all the necessary modern equipment for bacteriological and molecular biological testing using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
The СCPB offers a fee-based service offering unique PCR testing to detect viruses in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded biopsy/surgical material (hereinafter referred to as paraffin blocks).
In medical practice, nonspecific inflammatory changes are often detected during pathological examination of surgical and biopsy material. While it is impossible to identify the microorganism causing the inflammation based on microscopic data, this information can be critical for prescribing etiotropic therapy. The viral and bacteriological laboratory of the СCPB has developed a method for isolating DNA/RNA from paraffin blocks for further identification of infectious agents using the PCR method.
Currently, assays are available to detect nucleic acids of the following pathogens:
- for inflammatory diseases of the female genital organs, examination to determine the cause of infertility, in preparation for IVF, etc.: Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma genitalium and Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma parvum and U. urealyticum; herpes simplex virus types I and II; and also, if clinically indicated - Epstein-Barr virus, Parvovirus B19;
- in case of cervical dysplasia: human papillomaviruses of high carcinogenic risk;
- in chronic inflammatory bowel diseases: cytomegalovirus.
